As Natural As Possible
We make products that are “natural” as possible, while still being safe, enjoyable, and functional. (Read more about what "natural" means here.) We use certified organic, ECOCERT-approved, and non-GMO ingredients where practical and possible. We use vegetable and seed oils, essential oils, CO2 extracts, and distillates. We’d rather have a positive outlook and focus on what we DO use, as opposed to what we DON’T, but it bears noting that we DO NOT use parabens, sulfates, propylene glycol, or PEGs.
We believe that making products as "natural" as possible addresses environmental and sustainability issues and fosters a way to maintain the conditions in which humans and nature can coexist harmoniously.
Our labels are printed on paper made from stone, not trees! Specifically, the paper is a combination of mineral powder (a renewable natural resource) and a small amount of non-toxic resin — no trees. The production process uses neither water nor bleach, uses only approximately 50% of pulp printing paper’s energy consumption, and releases half as much CO2 as conventional pulp paper production. Additionally, printing requires 20% to 30% less ink. The result is an environmentally friendly paper and production process.
Additionally, we prefer to use glass bottles, but we appreciate that some products, like facial cleansers, often get taken into the shower. In those slippery situations, we use (recyclable!) plastic packaging for safety.
Our Step One Cleansing Oil is famously free of PEG-based emulsifiers, which is important because when PEGs are manufactured, the compound 1,4-dioxane is also produced as a byproduct. Although 1,4-dioxane does not present a hazard to consumers, it is a confirmed animal carcinogen, and when released into the environment, it leaches readily from soil to groundwater, where it remains stable and does not break down. Read more about this here.
Gramercy Skincare is proud to be certified cruelty-free by the Leaping Bunny program. The program requires that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by an approved company, its laboratories, or ingredient suppliers after a fixed cut-off date. While many ingredients have been tested on animals in the past, the program standard is designed to prevent future animal testing and eventually drive animal testing out of the industry completely. All Leaping Bunny companies must be open to independent audits, and commitments are renewed on an annual basis. (Read the full Standard here.) Because of the program's rigid standard, the CCIC's Leaping Bunny-approved products is the only list and logo that consumers can truly trust.
